Government Plans New Measures to Boost Tourism Ahead of Upcoming Season**
The government has unveiled several programs to enhance facilities for tourists ahead of the upcoming tourism season.
A Special Performance Task Force appointed by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake convened its second meeting yesterday (14) at the Presidential Secretariat to take key decisions aimed at strengthening the tourism industry.
Discussions focused on simplifying visa issuance and the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) process for visitors. Attention was also given to increasing immigration counters at airports to ease congestion, as well as introducing convenient online ticketing systems for entry to major tourist attractions.
The meeting also addressed challenges faced by both tourists and stakeholders in the tourism sector.
Among those in attendance were Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath, Deputy Minister of Tourism Ruwan Ranasinghe, Presidential Secretary Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumara Kumanayake, Ministry Secretary Aruni Ranaraja, and heads of institutions related to the tourism sector. Private sector representatives included John Keells Holdings CEO Krishan Balendra and EKHO Hotels and Resorts Vice President Nihal Muhandiram, along with other industry delegates.
The Presidential Media Division stated that the measures are part of the government’s efforts to strengthen Sri Lanka’s image as a tourist-friendly destination and ensure a smoother experience for visitors during the upcoming season.
