An event to hand over 19 fishing boats valued at LKR 1.3 million to rebuild the livelihoods of fishermen in the Trincomalee District affected by Cyclone ‘Ditwa’ was held yesterday (13) at the Trincomalee District Secretariat.
Organized by Trincomalee District Secretary Mr. W.G.M. Hemantha Kumara, the event was attended by the Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, Mr. Ramalingam Chandrasekar, who handed over the boats to the affected fishermen.
This initiative was implemented to support fishermen who faced severe hardship after losing their boats and equipment due to Cyclone ‘Ditwa’. This provides the affected fishermen an opportunity to resume their fishing activities and strengthen their livelihoods.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment Arun Hemachandra, Trincomalee District Member of Parliament Roshan Akmeemana, Secretary to the Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Dr. B.K. Kolitha Kamal Jinadasa, and Director General of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Mr. Susantha Kahawatta also participated and presented the boats to the beneficiaries.
Additionally, a large gathering including Trincomalee District Fisheries Harbour officials, representatives of district fisheries societies, public officials, and members of the local fishing community attended the event.
