A team of officers from the Tangalle Division Poisonous Drugs Unit arrested two male suspects and one female suspect yesterday (22), along with 270 kg and 994 g of cannabis-infused ‘Madana Modaka’, raw cannabis, and equipment and machinery used for production, at an unlicensed manufacturing facility operating in the Arawanamulla area of the Ambalantota police division.
The arrested suspects, aged 36, 26, and 50, are residents of the Sevanagala and Kirama areas, and the manufacturing facility had been operated in the Mirijjawila area of Hambantota.
During the raid, investigating officers took into custody as production evidence 100 kg and 500 g of prepared cannabis-infused Madana Modaka, 11,133 packaged packets categorized under various weights and prices, 430 g of raw cannabis, and the processing machinery and equipment found inside the premises.
The current market value of the seized cannabis-infused Madana Modaka is approximately Rs. 3 million (30 Lakhs), and investigations have revealed that the products were being transported to various parts of the island.
The raid was carried out based on intelligence received by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nipun Dehigama, In-Charge of the Tangalle Division, under his direct supervision and following instructions from Chief Inspector (CI) Wasantha Kumara, OIC of the Tangalle Division Crime Investigation Branch. The operation was executed by Sub-Inspector (SI) Kasun Hettiarachchi (OIC of the Tangalle Division Poisonous Drugs Unit), Police Sergeant (PS) 2354 Prageeth, PS 40648 Gamage, PS 40659 Sanjeewa, Police Constable (PC) 82633 Lakmal, and PC 87119 Amila.
The suspects and confiscated evidence have been handed over to the Ambalantota Police Station and are scheduled to be produced before the Hambantota Magistrate’s Court today (23).
