Tourist Boat Service to Sand Islands along Ram Setu (Rama’s Bridge)

A New Opportunity for Tourism in Mannar

Rohini Nishanthan – Mannar

The three-day tourism program organized in the Mannar District to mark World Tourism Day officially commenced yesterday (25) at the Alpata Grounds in Mannar.

The Northern Province Governor, Mr. N. Vethanayahan, Mannar District Secretary, Mr. K. Kanakeshwaran, and Chairman of the Northern Province Tourism Bureau, Dr. J. Vivekanandan, along with other officials, inaugurated the program by lighting the traditional oil lamp.

Following the inauguration, various art, cultural, and tourism events were held.

Meanwhile, in line with World Tourism Day, a trial run was conducted yesterday to initiate a tourist boat service to explore eight sand islands said to be connected to Ram Setu (Rama’s Bridge) off the coast of Talaimannar, Mannar.

A group traveling in a boat that departed from Talaimannar reached the third sand island and inspected the area.

During the visit, attention was drawn to the geographical location of the sand islands, the feasibility of taking tourists to those areas, and the necessary basic amenities required.

Discussions were also held with local residents, the Department of Wildlife Conservation, and other relevant parties regarding a suitable departure and arrival location for the boats.

Accordingly, arrangements have been made to launch the tourist boat service from Talaimannar to view the sand islands starting this coming Monday (28), after making the necessary preparations.

It is anticipated that this boat service will open up new opportunities to introduce the marine, natural, and cultural tourism resources of the Mannar District to both local and foreign tourists.

Furthermore, it is noted that this initiative will generate new employment and income opportunities for local residents across various sectors related to the tourism industry, including boat services, tour guiding, food and beverage sales, and the sale of local products and handicrafts.

If this service is continuously developed under a proper plan and safety standards, it is expected to create a fresh impetus to further promote marine tourism in the Mannar District.
