The National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) has launched a nationwide, comprehensive research initiative to assess the potential impacts of future El Niño-driven weather conditions on Sri Lanka’s marine ecosystems, fish stocks, and the fishing industry. According to NARA Chairman Prof. Sanath Hettiarachchi, the study is being conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, along with other relevant state agencies and research institutions.

The research involves the continuous collection and analysis of marine data, including ocean temperatures, currents, fish distribution, migration patterns, and fluctuations in fish stocks. The study specifically focuses on environmental changes caused by El Niño, such as population declines, shifts in fish migration, variations in fish production, and the impact on sensitive habitats like coral reefs. Recognizing that changes in marine resources directly affect fishers’ livelihoods, research teams are also evaluating the socio-economic conditions of coastal communities.
Through this initiative, NARA aims to secure the scientific data needed to identify and assess prospective changes in Sri Lanka’s ocean and fishery resources. Prof. Hettiarachchi stated that the findings will help authorities forecast potential climate-driven challenges, formulate appropriate policy decisions, implement resource management measures, and establish early-warning systems. He emphasized that scientific research of this nature is vital for safeguarding livelihoods, ensuring the sustainable use of marine resources, and preparing the fisheries sector for future climate challenges.
However, Prof. Hettiarachchi clarified that the current rise in local fish prices is not caused by El Niño. Stating that it is incorrect to link ongoing price hikes with potential future El Niño impacts, he confirmed that there is currently no scientific evidence indicating an active El Niño condition affecting Sri Lanka or reducing its fish stocks. He emphasized that this research is being conducted purely as a proactive measure to scientifically evaluate and prepare for future climate-related impacts on marine systems.
