Sri Lanka has welcomed the initial phase of the Gaza peace agreement, stressing the urgent need for comprehensive and lasting peace and stability in the region.
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry noted that Sri Lanka, having endured the devastation of conflict in its own past, deeply values the importance of peace. The Ministry expressed hope that the agreement would serve as a foundation for long-term stability in Gaza.
Sri Lanka also commended the efforts of U.S. President Joe Biden, along with the mediation of Qatar, Egypt, and Türkiye, in facilitating the agreement.
Reaffirming its support for the Palestinian people’s right to statehood, Sri Lanka urged both parties to pursue constructive dialogue to achieve a durable solution. The statement further underscored the importance of implementing UN resolutions that call for a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders.
